Our research incorporates a number of different tools. We endorse and follow the basic framework of ASHA for Evidence-Based Practice. That is, we are interested in ex;loring components of BEST PRACTICE, which is an interaction of SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE, CLIENT VALUES, and CLINICIAN EXPERTISE.

We use a number of traditional research designs, including single subject experimental designs and group designs, to collect evidence on the effectivess of interventions.

Narrative methodologies, such as narrative ethnography and autoethnography, help us capture experiential and emotional aspects of the clinical process and of the lives of people living with neurogenic communication disorders. Narrative methodologies such as in-depth interviewing can also help us uncover important aspects of clinician expertise

Among our tools is the Aphasia TalkBank, a databse of discourse in aphasia that includes transcription and analysis tools. We were pleased to host Dr. Brian MacWhinney for a TalkBank seminar in September, 2008.

Together, these quantiative and qualitative research efforts focus on how best practice should be and currently is implemented.
